Leading industrial gas solutions provider Gulf Cryo has received a Supply Achievement Award from Hyundai Engineering due to its “unrivalled” supply of 2,700 metric tonnes of liquid nitrogen (LIN) to the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal at Al Zour, Kuwait.

The supply was used to cool down the terminal’s facilities to -120C just before unloading the LNG from ships to storage tanks.

Completed in no longer than a week, the LIN has been fully supplied through Gulf Cryo’s cryogenic gas production plants in Kuwait, with day four of the supply seeing a peak in supply of 540 tonnes per day.

Following the cooling, the facilities are checked for mechanical integrity of the jetties and piping system while maintaining an inert atmosphere. This cooling procedure improves the ease and efficiency of unloading the LNG. Any risks associated with the supply were reduced by observing HAZOP studies.

The cooldown procedure itself differed from the usual method of directly introducing cryogenic liquid, instead the unloading lines – initially at ambient temperature - were sprayed by cold vapour. This can help avoid flaring of LNG during the supply process, thereby increasing energy efficiency.

Commenting on the collaboration, Amer Huneidi, Executive Chairman, Gulf Cryo, said, “We are glad to have provided an innovative and world class solution that is highly efficient and well-suited to meet the significant requirements of our customer.”

“The success of this supply is a hallmark of our performance and supply chain competency and will inspire us to work towards a continued leading position across the region.”

“I will also take this opportunity to thank Hyundai Engineering Co. LTD. For collaborating with us in this commisioningm providing us an opportunity to surpass this momentous milestone in our journey.”

Al Zour’s LNG terminal is expected to import as much as 22m tonnes of LIN when fully operational, with a storage capacity of 1.8m cubic metres of LNG and a liquefaction capacity of 30bn cubic metres per day.

Industrial and medical gas solutions provider, Gulf Cryo, is contributing to reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions at a Saudi Arabian mono-ethylene glycol (MEG) plant operated by hydrocarbon and petrochemical company Petro Rabigh.
